Media Alert: Minister Winde to Celebrate World Food Day in Suurbraak

15 October 2014
This Friday, 17 October, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture will be commemorating World Food Day (WFD) 2014 in Suurbraak, near Swellendam.

As part of the celebrations, Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, and the Mayor of Swellendam will be handing over a ‘food mountain’ to pre-identified community organisations. Minister Winde will also deliver a keynote address.

As part of World Food Day, the department is supporting two community projects and 50 households with household food production packs to enable them to produce their own food.

The purpose of World Food Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food shortage and to strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. Other government departments involved in the food security sphere including the Departments of Education, Health, Water Affairs and Social Development, will also make input by way of presentations to those in attendance.

World Food Day is part of the Comprehensive Rural Development Plan and Suurbraak is one of the 15 development nodes in the Western Cape.

There will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.

Date: Friday, 17 October 2014
Time: 08:00
Venue: Gather at Suurbraak Tourism Office (Suurbraak Main Road) before departing on a tour of the various projects in the area.
