Western Cape the Superstar for New British Airways Ad

16 May 2014

The Western Cape takes a leading role in the latest British Airways video to promote the airline’s new aircraft.

British Airways this week released its new online video showcasing one of its A380 craft.

The aircraft soars over iconic tourism landmarks such as Table Mountain and Cape Town’s popular beaches. Boulders beach penguins also feature as do Springbok rugby players, Jean de Villers and Schalk Burger.

The soundtrack for the video comes from award-winning South African band, Freshlyground.

Alan Winde, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, said the clip was an excellent boost for destination marketing.

“This is definitely a great tool for promoting the Western Cape to the world. We hope it will encourage even more tourists to visit our beautiful region. British Airways this month also increased their flights to Cape Town and we’d like to thank them for continued confidence in our destination,” said Minister Winde.

Minister Winde said tourism was an important economic driver.

“Each year, international tourists spend R18 billion in the Western Cape. The tourism sector employs around 150 000 residents in our province and is an industry where small businesses can flourish,” said Minister Winde.

Frank van der Post, British Airways’ managing director of brands and customer experience, explained why the airline chose Cape Town as the backdrop for the video.

“We selected Cape Town for the video because Table Mountain is so iconic. People around the world immediately identify it with South Africa,” said Van Der Post.
