Hex River Valley Farm Worker of the Year Crowned

26 August 2013

Gerrit van Rensburg, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development said the De Doorns regional round of the 2013 Western Cape Farm Worker of the Year Competition was a huge success.

This year saw a record 127 entrants, in comparison with 85 in 2012. There were also nine new farms entering the competition for the first time.

“The competition keeps on growing, once again highlighting the very real need for a platform from which to acknowledge the very important and valuable contribution farm workers make in our society”

Van Rensburg congratulated the De Doorns Winner, André Plaatjies from De Nonna Farm, competing in the senior management category.

“Congratulations with your achievement in De Doorns and good luck competing for the Provincial Farm Worker of the Year award later this year”

Van Rensburg said there is a need in South Arica for patriotism and urged farmers and farm workers to be proud South African citizens. “Through the celebration of excellence we will motivate South Africans to foster a new love for our country”.

This year’s competition will see 1 100 entrants compete for the overall prize of R100 000. The competition, with a budget of R1.5 million,  is financed by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture together with Shoprite, which is contributing R750 000 as the main sponsor.

There are 15 regions competing this year and all regional winners will qualify for the top position of Western Cape Farm Worker of the Year, which will be announced at a gala event in October.
