MEC's Visit Western Cape Community Safety Counterparts

10 October 2005
Western Cape MEC for Community Safety Leonard Ramatlakane says he is encouraged by comments made by his counterparts from other provinces, that the Department was at an advanced stage with its capacity to fight crime in communities.

MEC Ramatlakane hosted the MEC's for Community Safety of Free State Frans Morule, Rosina Semenya of Limpopo and Dina Pule of Mpumalanga for two days.

The three MEC's, who were also accompanied by their respective Heads of Department, were taken to several projects of the Western Cape Department of Community Safety.

"We have taken them to see for themselves our N2 satellite project, our train safety projects, the deployment of Bambanani volunteers and we rounded off with a visit to Chrysalis Academy in Tokai." Said Minister Ramatlakane.

The delegation appeared highly impressed with what they saw at the Chrysalis Academy where young men and women are trained in several skills ranging from youth to leadership to personal development.

Some of them had been in conflict with the law but turned to Chrysalis in a quest to build a new life for themselves.

Remarking at the end of the visit, Free State's MEC Frans Morule said: "It is clear that the Western Cape is advanced in its efforts to create a safer environment. We can learn a lot from them and therefore we have agreed with the other visiting provinces, that we should send officials in our Departments who will come and spend time with Western Cape officials."

MEC for Community Safety in Mpumalanga Dina Pule said: "Although provinces like Mpumalanga and Limpopo do not experience crimes like the abduction of children and dealing in narcotics, we do acknowledge that we have alot to learn from the Western Cape and I am impressed with what I have seen."

MEC Ramatlakane says, "Our objective with programmes such as Chrysalis, is that we want to contribute to building a future for our country and our youth. We shall have to share with our provinces what we have and we can also learn from them when they send their Departmental officials to come and visit. ? But they should be warned that they will be working from as early as 7am and will not be on holiday" joked MEC Ramatlakane
