MEC Max Codemns Rape of Two Year Old and Cautions Parents on Unsafe Households

3 September 2009
The MEC for Community Safety, Adv. Lennit Max, strongly condemns the alleged rape of a two year old girl from Delft. This after a 23 year old suspect, who is the girl's uncle, has been arrested by police on 2nd September.

Max said it is utterly sick that most attacks against children come from within their own homes. It is even more tragic that many of these crimes are committed by a family member, who are also entrusted to assist with the upbringing of that child.

He said households, are suppose to be places where children can grow up in a safe and trusted environment. It appears that many homes have now become unsafe for its children. It is also disappointing that homes now also reflect a society where the respect of the life of a person are increasingly disregarded.

He advised parents to ensure that their children are in reliable care every minute of the day. Parents must be alert to any suspicious conduct of any family member towards their children and they must have regular conversations with their children about their general well being.

Max said that parents must cultivate and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships in their homes.
