Fifty Six (56) People Arrested for Drunk Driving over the Weekend

9 May 2010

Over the past weekend fifty six (56) people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Provincial roads. The focus is to clamp down on drunk drivers. The Provincial Traffic Department wants to send out a clear message to all drunk drivers; "Drunk Driving is a criminal offence and if you are going to drink and drive you will be caught and charged".

Lawlessness will not be tolerated on any public roads in this Province and transgressors that are caught will be dealt with accordingly. These roadblocks will continue every Friday and Saturday for the rest of the month of May, June and July 2010. Also with the Fifa Soccer world cup at our doorstep, where people will be in a festive mood and spirit, we are not saying people cannot drink, but when they do, it should be responsible.

A total of seven hundred and forty three (743) people were tested for alcohol which leads to fifty six (56) drivers being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. These arrests form part of our "Safely Home" campaign where we want to reduce road deaths with fifty percent (50%) by 2014.

Prevention is better than cure. If you know a person had too much alcohol consumed call our operational room at 021 931 1646 immediately. Don't hesitate, your family or friend's life may depend upon your response. On an average, one person is injured approximately every 2 minutes in alcohol-related crashes.
