Thirty Eight Drunk Drivers Arrested in 'Safely Home' Operations

During operations over the weekend two thousand two hundred and eight-seven (2287) motorists were stopped at Provincial Traffic integrated roadblocks. Traffic officers screened six hundred and ninety-two (692) drivers for alcohol abuse, thirty eight (38) of the six hundred and ninety-two (692) were over the legal limit, and was arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence of liquor.

The other arrests that were made during these integrated operations were.

    1. one (1) person for the possession of two (2) dagga cigarettes and two (2) mandrax tablets
    2. two (2) persons for the possession of dangerous weapons
    3. three (3) unlicenced drivers
    4. two (2) drunk pedestrians
    5. two (2) drivers for overloading their trucks with goods

Traffic officers issued five hundred and fourteen (514) fines for various traffic law contraventions, and five hundred and fifty-five (555) drivers were caught for speeding.

Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement officials were deployed across the province to ensure that, motorists who break the law are dealt with. Most accidents are caused by road users acting contrary to the statutes that were laid down to ensure law and order on our roads. Therefore our request is that motorists comply voluntarily, and become a road safety activist.
