Drunks and Druggies Caught in Safely Home Operations

Provincial Traffic stopped more than three thousand (3000) vehicles in weekend operations, and screened nine hundred (900) drivers for alcohol abuse. Only two percent (2%) was found to be over the legal limit which totaled to nineteen (19) drivers arrested for allegedly being drunk while driving.

The other arrests that were made during these integrated operations were four (4) persons for having drugs in their possession, one (1) had mandrax and three (3) had dagga. Traffic officers also arrested two (2) taxi drivers for operating without operating licences.

Traffic officers issued four hundred and seventy-four (474) fines for different traffic law contraventions, and three hundred and seventeen (317) drivers were caught speeding. The highest speed recorded was one hundred and fifty-seven kilometres per hour (157km/h) in a one hundred and twenty kilometres per hour (120 km) zone, in the Beaufort West area.

Provincial Traffic officers attended one (1) accident over the weekend at the R300/Stellenbosch Arterial intersection, where a fatality was recorded. The accident occurred on the 06/11/2010 at about 23h50. A Ford fiesta and Vuka motor cycle were involved in the accident, it is alleged that the motorcar turned towards the R300 (direction Bellville from Stellenbosch Arterial) and collided with the motorcycle. The driver and passenger were both thrown off the motorcycle. The passenger on the motorcycle died on the scene.
