Department of Community Safety to host Policing Needs and Priorities engagement

2 February 2023

On 03 February 2023, the Department of Community Safety will host its Policing Needs and Priorities (PNP) engagement in the City of Cape Town for the SAPS Metro West area.

The PNP engagement is critical to determine the Metro West area’s policing needs and priorities. This will culminate in a report that will be submitted to the National Minister of Police to take into account when resource allocation is done to the province as well as inform SAPS strategic and operational plans for the Metro West. It will also identify safety initiatives to be implemented by the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town.

Various stakeholders have been invited – such as the stakeholders from all spheres of Government, Community Police Forums (CPFs), the South African Police Service (SAPS), Neighbourhood Watches (NHWs), the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Police Ombudsman and NGOs will form part of the Cape Metro West PNP engagement.

The Minister for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, who will also be in attendance stated: “As we head to our final Policing needs and priorities safety summit, I would like to firstly express my gratitude to all stakeholders who have thus far contributed significantly to this important report. This engagement allows us to further obtain insight and information that will enhance the report that will be presented to the national government, forcing their hand to provide us with the relevant and required resources. I’m looking forward to seeing and engaging our safety stakeholders.”

The engagements are intended to contribute significantly to the prevention and reduction of violent crime and murders, by providing for greater integration and collaboration between government, civil society, and stakeholders.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews.
