Today, the Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, welcomes reports from the South African Police Services that there have been no incidents of taxi-related violence overnight and so far today.
The last three days have seen calm returned to the Metro which had otherwise been gripped by taxi-related violence for the past few weeks.
Minister Fritz said, “I’m just glad that we have been able to restore calm. The South African Police Services, supported by the SANDF, Metro Police and other law enforcement agencies, have really done an excellent job in bringing calm back to our streets. And I really think that it is important that we acknowledge the work they have done.”
Minister Fritz continued, “I remain in contact with the Provincial Commissioner, and I am advised that investigations around the events over the past few weeks are ongoing. We look forward to further arrests and convictions, because we are a society of law and order, and criminals must know that there are consequences to criminality.”
Minister Fritz concluded, “we continue to encourage the SAPS and all law enforcement agencies to ensure our citizens are safe. Everyone can see the benefits of this significant response, in my view, the most important of which being that our citizens can get back to living their lives.”
