The fight against GBV continues: Minister Albert Fritz meets with family of Sinovuyo Magatya

Today, the Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, met with the family of Sinovuyo Magatya. Her body was found over the weekend, and formed part of a total of 35 homicides over the past weekend, including eleven in Harare alone.

Sinovuyo disappeared after leaving a shebeen last week with the 30-year-old suspect who has since been arrested in connection with her murder. The suspect initially denied any knowledge or involvement and actually accompanied the family to people he said he saw Sinovuyo leave the shebeen with in Makhaza. After Sinovuyo’s cellphone was found at the suspect’s home, police went back and arrested him, whereupon they discovered a bloody towel. Sinovuyo’s body was then found, hours later, in an abandoned shack also belonging to the suspect.

Minister Fritz said, “I wanted to meet with the family because I want to extend my sincere condolences to them and to the entire community of Khayelitsha, including the Khayelitsha Development Forum. We will continue to work with all stakeholders, including the South African Police Service and community structures, to ensure that these senseless killings come to an end.”

Minister Fritz concluded, “I reiterate my commitment made earlier in the week that we will be watching this case; this case and the case of Gogo Constance Ndlebe who was killed so heinously. We are not going to rest until justice is realized in these cases.”
