Minister Fritz requests court watching brief for shooting of Marlon Fuller

14 December 2020

The Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, welcomes the two arrests made as a result of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (IPID) investigation into the shooting and killing of Marlon Fuller (38) in Hanover Park, on 5 December 2020.

Minister Fritz will request that the court watching brief unit monitor the case for any policing inefficiencies that might result in it being struck off the court roll, in line with the Department’s oversight capacity of SAPS in the Western Cape.

Two SAPS officers, who are both reportedly Police Reservists, were arrested in connection with the shooting and appeared at Athlone Magistrates’ Court today. It is further reported that Fuller’s daughter, Tameeka, was assaulted by officers after picking up bullet casings during the incident.

Fuller, a security officer, was shot and succumbed to his wounds in hospital after reportedly leaving his house to call his daughters home from a nearby playground at midnight. The officers arrived shortly afterwards. It is unclear why the officers began shooting.

Minister Fritz said, “I welcome the arrests and the progress made by IPID in this investigation. Our police officers are responsible for making us feel safe and any actions contrary to that must be investigated and met with the appropriate disciplinary action. I call for calm and ask the community to let the wheels of justice turn and for due process to be followed.”

Minister Fritz added, “To ensure that this case is not simply swept under the rug, I will request that the court watching brief unit monitors this matter for any policing inefficiencies that may result in it being struck off the court role. We must ensure that there is justice.”

Minister Fritz added further, “I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the Fuller family during this difficult time. No child should have to lose their parent under such circumstances. I call on anyone with information which could further assist IPID in their investigation to immediately come forward and report such.”
