Results of Safely Home Operations: First Weekend of School Holidays
Media Statement by Dan Plato, Minister of Community Safety
This weekend's integrated law enforcement operations led to the arrest of 25 drivers who were found to be under the influence of alcohol.
Alcohol blitz roadblocks by Provincial Traffic, SAPS and Municipal Traffic saw a total of 1 562 vehicles stopped and 594 drivers screened for driving drunk.
A man was also arrested after being recorded at 151km/h in an 80km/h zone on the N1 toll road near Paarl.
The highest breath alcohol readings were recorded in Caledon at 1.19mg/1 000ml and Swellendam at 1.81mg/1 000ml.
A total of 618 speeding offences were recorded, with 257 spot fines issued for various traffic violations.
A driver was killed when his vehicle overturned on the N2 near Knysna and a pedestrian lost her life on the N1 near Kraaifontein.
There are still too many reckless drivers on our roads who gamble with their own lives and the lives of others. I urge all road users to be vigilant and to adhere to the rules of the road as we will continue with these operations as we endeavour to increase safety on all Western Cape roads.
