Minister Fritz welcomes 3 arrests made by LEAP officers

8 October 2020

The Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, welcomes the three arrests made by the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) Learner Law Enforcement Officers (LLEO), deployed through the Western Cape Safety Plan over the past week.

The 500 deployed LLEOs are currently supporting and providing back-up to SAPS in deployment areas across the Metro which include Bishop Lavis, Delft, Khayelitsha, Philippi, Hout Bay Ocean View, Grassy Park, Tokai, Diep River and Wynberg.

Minister Fritz said, “The LLEOs are ensuring increased police visibility, coverage and working to halve the murder rate in the province over the next ten years through data-led and evidence-driven deployment.”

Between 28 September 2020 and 4 October 2020, LEAP LLEOs:

  • Searched 753 persons;
  • Issued 433 notices; and
  • Made three arrests.

Of the three arrests made:

  • One arrest was made in Delft for possession of illicit narcotics;
  • One arrest was made in Muizenberg for assault and resisting arrest; and
  • One arrest was made in Kleinvlei for possession of illicit narcotics.

Minister Fritz said, “I commend our LLEOs on their consistent efforts to improve the safety of residents in the Province by providing much needed support to SAPS. At the same time, my Department are hard at work finalizing our violence prevention strategies because we know that it is not enough to deploy additional boots on the ground.”
