R690 960 allocated to support Chrysalis-JazzArt dancers

26 April 2020

Under the leadership of the Provincial Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, the Department of Community Safety has allocated R690 960 towards the appointment of twenty JazzArt dance interns. This will ensure that they are employed and that their art is protected during the lockdown period.

JazzArt is a social-creative collaboration between the Chrysalis Academy and the JazzArt Dance Theatre which started in 2016. It focusses on the development of dance and leadership skills, as well as community service through the Dance Leadership Programme. Please see video here of JazzArt dancers performing, prior to the lockdown.

Minister Fritz said, “I am glad that we are able to support these performers whose art has a life changing impact on many young vulnerable people. The stipend will be granted for a period of twelve months. Following the twelve-month appointment, an extension will be considered.”

Minister Fritz added, “The Department of Community Safety previously supported Chrysalis Academy’s JazzArt Programme through the appointment of eighteen youth workers and a Team Leader who were placed as dance interns at Chrysalis’ JazzArt Dance Leadership Programme on a 9-month contract between April 2019 and December 2019.”
