Minister Fritz launches matric camp for Hanover Park school

4 October 2019

Today, the Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, launched the Crystal Secondary School Matric Camp in partnership with Chrysalis Youth Academy to prepare learners for their upcoming matric exams.

In total, 43 learners are attending the camp, and will benefit from one-to-one tutoring, psycho-social support and inspirational workshops to prepare them both academically and mentally for their upcoming exams. The camp aims to facilitate access to opportunities for the youth beyond matric.

Minister Fritz said, “Crystal Secondary School forms part of the three high schools targeted as a part of the Hanover Park safety blitz project to address crime and violence in the community. It is vitally important that our young people are made aware of the opportunities available to them after school and are supported to ensure that they receive their qualification. We need to ensure that they are not left behind or fall prey to a life of crime, but instead play an active and productive role in our society.”

Minister Fritz further added, “StatSA tells us that in the first quarter of 2019, 55.2% of South African youth between the ages of 15-24 years were unemployed. It is therefore necessary that initiatives are put in place which equip our young people for the life of work, further study and adulthood as they complete their schooling. Ultimately, providing opportunities for and capacitating our young people with navigational skills is key to safeguarding our province.”

Under the leadership of Minister Fritz, the Department of Community Safety will continue to use every tool at its disposal to uplift and safeguard the young people of this province.
