Tomorrow, 12 February 2019, Minister of Community Safety, Alan Winde will serve as a Commissioner of Oaths, certifying documents from a safety kiosk opposite the Cape Town Central Police station.
This exercise forms part of the Western Cape Government’s offer to the national Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, to deploy Government employees as volunteer Commissioners of Oaths in police stations to alleviate police officers from administrative desk work so that they are able to focus on averting crime and patrolling the streets.
All government employees above a certain pay level are by law able to act as Commissioners of Oaths. A snap survey amongst Department of Community Safety staff indicated that there is a high degree of willingness to volunteer.
Said Winde: “We have waited since October last year for the national minister in charge of police to respond to our request. Since he has not, we have now taken the further step of moving our kiosk to an appropriate location close to the station and will do a test run certifying documents from there. Our aim is to help officers get back onto the streets, and to help residents avoid debilitating queues which keep them from their workplaces.”
There will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.
ALL MEDIA ARE INVITED TO ATTEND.
