Minister Alan Winde hosts his first meeting with PSAC Committee

4 February 2019

On Tuesday, 22 January 2019, Minister of Community Safety, Mr Alan Winde, hosted this year’s first Western Cape Provincial Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) meeting. This was the Minister’s first gathering with the members of the advisory committee since taking over the Western Cape Community Safety portfolio on 1 November 2018.

After holding their inaugural meeting on 10 April 2018, the PSAC has been meeting on a quarterly basis. The committee, established in terms of section 25(1) of the Western Cape Community Safety Act (CSA), advises the Minister on strategies, policies, budgets and annual performance plans, issues relating to safety and security and any other matters arising from the implementation of the CSA. Key discussion points at this quarter’s meeting included the need for a prevention-focused approach to safety in the Province and the need for better coordination between all safety and security stakeholders.

The PSAC is composed of representatives from four sectors: a representative of the business community, a member of the judiciary, a senior member of an academic institution and a representative from a non-governmental organisation. The Head of the Department is an ex officio member.

The next PSAC Meeting will take place on Wednesday, 06 March 2019. The committee welcomes Minister Winde and looks forward to implementing new ways of ensuring a safer Western Cape Better Together
