SHAWCO and DOCS bring wellness to Gugulethu

28 July 2018

During the July centenary celebration of the birth of world icon, Nelson Mandela, people partook in a global campaign of charitable acts, in honour of the former head-of-state, his principles and visions of unison and inclusion. One such campaign was spearheaded by Africa Unite, in partnership with the University of Cape Town’s Student’s Health and Wellness Centre Organisation (SHAWCO), the South African Education Directory, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and various other notable stakeholders.

Themed Mandela Commemoration All-In, the campaign seeks to take healthcare and welfare to developing communities in the Western Cape Province and the rest of the country over the next year. The event, which took up the style of an exhibition, saw the provision of free services to the people of the community of Gugulethu at the Gugulethu Sport Complex, on Saturday, 28 July 2018.

The Department of Community Safety was invited to exhibit at the event and educate community members on the various safety projects that are being initiated in their communities i.e. the Walking Bus Project, the Neighbourhood Watch and the Youth Safety Religious Programme, to mention a few.

The people of Gugulethu and the surrounding areas also made use of the mobile clinics that offered free medical services.

The attendees were treated to a workshop on Disaster Management and Prevention and Sexual Reproductive Health Education from the Red Cross Hospital. The IEC also assisted them with registering to vote in the upcoming 2019 general elections.

All this was executed as part of Madiba’s vision of accessibility and service provision to developing communities.
