Media Alert: MEC Plato to attend Phusha Phambili July tournament in Khayelitsha

13 July 2018

Tomorrow, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, will attend the weekend long sports and recreational tournament, Phusha Phambili, in Town Two, Khayelitsha.

The July tournament running this weekend is part of the Phusha Phambili campaign being rolled out in Town Two, Khayelitsha, through the Alcohol Harms Reduction Game Changer and will see more than 300 young people from the area participate in soccer, netball, choral music, majorettes, aerobics group exercise and traditional dance.

The Phusha Phambili campaign aims to help provide youth with attractive alternative activities in a safe environment promoting recreation removed from negative social behaviour, such as alcohol abuse or premature alcohol exposure.

Town Two has already benefitted from extensive Game Changer interventions such as increased deployment of liquor inspectors, law enforcement officers, as well as the installation of high mast cameras all of which aims to help improve safety in the area in their own way.

The tournament, following on the success of a similar tournament held over Easter this year, was born as a ‘Community Owned Solution’ (COS). This saw17 Alcohol Harms Reduction Community Advocates recruit 20 local sport coaches to help conduct weekly sport and recreational activities in the community which have attracted hundreds of young residents on a weekly basis.

The full tournament kicks off today with group and knockout stages planned for Friday and Saturday, 13 – 14 July 2018, at both the Thembelihle High School and the Esigingqini Sports field. The finals for the different sporting codes and showcasing of other recreational activities (majorettes, traditional dance, aerobics and choral music) is scheduled for Sunday, 15 July 2018, culminating in trophy and prize handovers at Thembelihle High School.

There will be an opportunity for photographs and interviews.
