DoCS HOD, Dr Gilbert Lawrence, receives AGSA Lifetime Achievement

1 April 2015

Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

I wish to congratulate the outgoing Head of the Department of Community Safety, Dr Gilbert Lawrence, on being honoured by the Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA) with a Lifetime Achievement award.

Dr Lawrence’s dedication and commitment to the public service has steered the Department to attain its 5th consecutive Clean Audit report. This is a significant achievement for Good Governance in the Public Sector.  The AGSA’s recognition of his exemplary service is a befitting testament of and swansong for, Dr Lawrence who has retired at the end of March 2015.

His presence, guidance, wisdom and contribution towards safety in the province has been considerable and has laid the foundation for his successor, Mr Gideon Morris, to build from and ensure the continued success of the Department of Community Safety.

Mr Morris has proven his dedication to safety and quality of work in his former post as Chief Director in the Department of Community Safety. He takes over from Dr Lawrence as Head of Department effective today, 1 April 2015, following the Department’s extensive selection and interview process.

I look forward to working closely with Mr Morris in the years to come as we aim to create safer communities in the province in partnership with various stakeholders and Government Departments towards realising Strategic Goal 3 – Increasing wellness, safety and tackling social ills – Better Together.

I wish Dr Lawrence all the best during the years ahead and thank him for serving the people of the Western Cape with distinction.
