Minister Plato Condemns Murder of Another Police Officer

13 August 2014

Media Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

I strongly condemn the murder of Warrant Officer NM Johannessen in Worcester, who was killed on duty while trying to apprehend two suspects.

It is a sad day for the South African Police Services (SAPS) in Worcester and in the province; as yet another brave officer who has chosen to protect our communities has been killed.

I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Warrant Officer Johannessen, as well as his colleagues in the police service.

This crime cannot go unpunished.

I call on the community to assist the police in their investigation and to ensure that those responsible for such a heinous crime are identified and arrested.

Every member of the public must work together to bring these criminals to book. Anyone with information on police killings can contact their nearest police station, call Crime Stop confidentially on 086 0010 111, or SMS Crime Line on 32211.

It is everyone’s responsibility to assist, support and help protect those who risk their lives every day to keep criminals off the streets and our communities safe.
