Three Police Officers Killed in Western Cape

1 July 2014

Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

I have just been informed that three South African Police Service (SAPS) officers have been killed in Nyanga and Mfuleni in the Western Cape. It is unacceptable that the people who have chosen to protect our communities are being attacked and killed.

I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family of the officers, their friends, and colleagues in the police service.

According to reports, the police officers were responding to a hijacking when the suspects shot them while still in the police vehicle and fled the scene with the officers’ firearms.

These attacks must not go unpunished and I am calling on the communities to assist the SAPS in apprehending the killers.
