Fresh Deliveries for New Maternity Ward

10 April 2013

Personnel at Hermanus Hospital were delighted to move into the newly built maternity ward on Monday, 8 April 2013.  It was,  however the delivery of several bouncing babies that cemented the joy.

The new maternity ward is a great improvement from the old one, which for many years formed part of the general ward and had nine available beds. The new ward has 23 beds, a dedicated four-bed Kangaroo Mother Care in-patient unit, two delivery theatres and more bathrooms.

The area also boasts an improved security system whereby visitors to the ward are required to use an intercom system for access.

When one of the moms was asked what she thought of the new ward, Mrs Charlen Hayman stated, “everything is so nice and clean and all went very well, the staff have been really friendly.”

During the next few days several new areas will be occupied, these include radiology, a specialised out-patients department, the new Emergency Centre and the physical rehabilitation unit.

Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, says: “I look forward to the completion of the new hospital, which we will open in the second half of the year. Together with the new NHLS laboratory that will open here soon, the people of the Overstrand will experience an improvement in service delivery. Congratulations to our new moms! Treasure your babies, and look after them well.”

The R70 million building project forms part of the capital expenditure projects to improve infrastructure of facilities in the Western Cape. The project is due for completion by September 2013.
