Metropolitan Refurbished Hospital Common Room for Nurses Day
Metropolitan, one of South Africa’s leading financial services and healthcare companies, refurbished the nurses’ common room at Tygerberg Hospital as a thank you to nurses. It was unveiled to hospital staff on 12 May 2015 in honour of International Nurses Day.
In addition to the refurbishment which took place, Metropolitan also demonstrated their appreciation to nurses in a number of hospitals across the country by providing small gifts and hosting various activities in a gesture of thanks for the work that they do.
“Health services across the world face a challenge of nursing shortages, while South Africa with its high training standards produces sought-after nurses. Nurses form the backbone of our health sector, which is why Western Cape Government Health has 12 604 nurses in its employ, with 1 921 at Tygerberg Hospital currently,” said Mr Tendani Mabuda, Senior Manager: Nursing Services at Tygerberg Hospital.
“In celebrating International Nurses Day, the Western Cape Government Health wishes to draw attention to the invaluable role nurses play in delivering quality healthcare to the Western Cape community. We salute the nurses of the Western Cape and celebrate those who contribute so immensely of themselves to improve the health and lives of others in need.”
Ntombi Mponda, Brand Experience Manager for Metropolitan, explained: “In recognition of the critical role that nurses play in our national health system – and the often challenging conditions they face – we wanted to acknowledge these individuals by creating a comfortable space for them, where they are free to relax or enjoy a meal. The refurbishment is driven by our desire to improve employee efficacy – providing nurses with a quiet haven in which to relax and regroup, and thus assisting in boosting staff morale.”
Mabuda said: “We expect there to be a lot of traffic in the revamped common room, judging by our nurses’ faces when it was revealed!”
Mponda added: “We hope that these areas evolve into an informal meeting place where hospital employees can exchange information, generate ideas and support each other. Metropolitan’s vision is to empower members of the community to confidently shape their future, securing their financial wellbeing. Healthcare workers look after a different aspect of the community’s wellbeing. We wanted to recognise the work that these individuals do, as well as thank them for the difference they make in the lives of their patients.”
