EMS Alert: Motor Vehicle Accidents - 1 and 2 September 2012

Western Cape Government Health's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to two major motor vehicle accidents over the weekend.

1 September 2012
At 22:17 on Jan Smuts Drive, Athlone - In a t-bone collision between two cars, EMS rescuers had to extricate patients from both vehicles using the Jaws of Life. Eleven patients were found on the scene of which two were declared dead on arrival.

  • One adult male coded critical sustained head and back injuries and was transported to Groote Schuur Hospital by Netcare ambulance.
  • One four-year-old male in a critical condition was transported to Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital by ResQ Medix.
  • One adult female who suffered head and upper body injuries was critical and transported to Groote Schuur Hospital by EMS ambulance.
  • One adult male sustained back injuries was transported to N1 City Hospital by EMS ambulance.
  • One adult female suffered head and back injuries and was coded critical. She was transported to Groote Schuur Hospital by EMS ambulance.
  • One adult female sustained head and back injuries and was transported to Groote Schuur Hospital by EMS ambulance.
  • One adult female in a critical condition suffered severe head and back injuries and was transported to Groote Schuur Hospital by Netcare ambulance.
  • One adult female was declared dead on arrival after sustaining severe head injuries.
  • One adult male coded serious was transported to Gatesville Melomed by EMS ambulance.
  • One child (gender unconfirmed) suffered grave head, chest and back injuries and died on the scene of the accident. EMS Practitioners declared the patient deceased.
  • One adult male in a critical condition after sustaining serious head and back injuries was transported to Groote Schuur Hospital EMS ambulance.

2 September 2012
At 06:30 on the corner of Strandfontein and Fifth Avenue, Retreat - In an accident between a car and minibus taxi, one adult male driver from the taxi suffered neck and back injuries and was transported to Groote Schuur Hospital by EMS ambulance. The adult male driver of the car suffered a back wound and was transported to Claremont Medi-City by EMS ambulance.

At 08:40 on the N2, near the Hoekwil turn- off, Wilderness - EMS practitioners and rescuers responded and medically assisted patients on the scene of an accident where a car and motorbike collided. Two adult patients were coded critical and transported by ER24 to a health facility.

At 08:42 on Woolsack Drive, Rosebank - In a t-bone collision between two cars. Four patients, all adult females, were coded serious and had to be medically assisted by EMS practitioners. The patients mostly suffered back, head and neck injuries. They were transported by EMS ambulance and ER24 to Groote Schuur Hospital.
