Media Alert: Power Outage at New Somerset Hospital

25 June 2013
New Somerset Hospital in Green Point is currently experiencing a power outage in the main section of the hospital building. The cause for the power outage is unknown at this stage. Contractors are on-site to assess the cause and to rectify the situation.

The Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has done a full assessment of the situation and there is no need to evacuate patients from the hospital.

Impact on patients:
  • New Somerset Hospital’s Emergency Centre is fully functional with the use of a generator.
  • Three EMS vehicles are on-site for the transportation of critical patients.
  • Portable generators are keeping the Neonatal and Adult Intensive Care units running.
  • Labour wards, Radiology and theatres are non-functional at the moment. Patients are being monitored and those requiring emergency care will be attended to or referred as and when necessary.
New Somerset Hospital has contingency plans in place to ensure that all patients requiring emergency care are attended to and referred appropriately, where necessary. Western Cape Government Health requests that clients and visitors be patient during this period while the situation is rectified.
