100% Pass Rate for Worcester Hospital’s Nursing School

13 November 2012

For any student graduation day is the moment when all the hard work, long nights and studying comes together and calls for celebration. The graduation of 87 nurses of Worcester Hospital’s Nursing School yet again gave Western Cape Government Health ample reason to celebrate.

In his address, Professor Craig Househam, Head of Health, praised the efforts that each learner made to enable graduation. He stated that by deciding to dedicate themselves to the health of people, they are entering the most noble of all careers. Prof. Househam also urged the graduates to remember that communicating with one’s patient and the patient’s family is vital to a successful career and health service.

The actual graduation of the students brought much excitement at the venue and by the end of the evening, a staggering 30 of the 87 nurses had graduated with honours and distinctions.

Top graduate Carmen Adams was delighted to hear that she had won the Practical Prize for maintaining the highest practical mark throughout her course, she was more excited to accept the coveted Worcester Hospital Floating Trophy for the highest score in the final South African Nursing Council exam.  She is now a Registered Professional Nurse (Sister) and works at Radie Kotze Hospital in Piketberg.

The Worcester Hospital Nursing School, which was integrated into the Western Cape College of Nursing in April 2012, has succeeded in adding 11 new professional nurses, 37 nursing assistants (auxiliary nurses) and 39 staff nurses to the nursing community. Since the school's humble beginnings in 1995 with only five students, it has produced almost 2000 qualified nurses.
