Red Cross Children's Hospital Glues out Problem

12 January 2010

On New Year's Day, Ophthalmology Registrar, Dr Leonard Heydenrych, was on his way to perform a sight saving operation on an 18-month-old baby at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, when he suddenly realised that the ward had run out of superglue. He needed the superglue to perform a glue patch at 08:00 and realised that no shops would be open at 07:30 in the morning.

Using his own initiative, the doctor approached staff waiting outside Pick n Pay, Rondebosch. One of the managers kindly opened the store for the doctor to get the glue he needed. Dr Heydenrych could continue in time to successfully perform the operation and give the appropriate treatment. The glue is currently still being used by the department.
