German Company Donates Further Ten Million Rand towards Endoscopic Training

25 October 2010

Theuns Botha, Western Cape Minister of Health, yesterday afternoon met with Dr. Sybil Storz, the owner and chairperson of Karl Storz Endoscopy Pty Ltd, based in Germany, to thank her for a donation that will see endoscopic paediatric services boosted at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's hospital.

This donation will complement the new digital operating theatres at Red Cross War Memorial Hospital, where paediatric surgeons from all over the continent are trained.

Botha thanked Dr. Storz for her company's significant contribution to endoscopic training in South Africa and facilitated follow up meetings between the company and Western Cape tertiary hospitals to discuss training opportunities for doctors from all over South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

The Western Cape Department of Health has a longstanding relationship with Karl Storz Endoscopy Pty Ltd that recently established a wholly owned subsidiary in South Africa, with the company's head-office based in Cape Town. The company is one of the world's leading suppliers of endoscopic instruments and devices.

Over the past decade Karl Storz Endoscopy had made considerable contributions of the latest technologies in endoscopic surgery to three training institutions, namely the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery in Groote Schuur Hospital and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Tygerberg Hospital. Yesterday's visit was in view of the R10 million donation of endoscopic paediatric surgery equipment for the Karl Storz paediatric surgical training centre at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital.

Endoscopic surgery is the direct visual surgery of a hollow organ or cavity. For more information on Karl Storz Pty Ltd, visit www.karlstorz.com
