Emergency Rescue Personnel Receive Top Award

24 November 2010

On November 19, 2010, METRO Rescue personnel, Charl Nieuwoudt, Egnall Brown and Deon Alberts received the Centrum Guardian Project award. This national accolade is presented to rescue and emergency medical service workers who have gone the extra mile in their line of duty. The men were nominated for a rescue mission where they saved a family in the Breede River.

Reflecting on the rescue mission Nieuwoudt says, "The Breede River was in full flood when a family of five (5) travelling by car misjudged the depth of the water and was swept off a bridge. At the scene the Worcester and Overberg Fire Station teams realised that a swift Water Support team was needed."

"In our line of work, you need to put your heart and soul into what you do", he adds.

Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, congratulated the winners, "The Western Cape Department of Health is proud to have emergency medical staff who are willing to lay down their lives for others. I will personally congratulate them".

Minister Botha will attend a Certificate Awards Breakfast next week where he will have the opportunity to congratulate our Hero's (December 3, 2010).
