Official opening of Napier Clinic

26 September 2018

Today (Wednesday, 26 September 2018), Western Cape Minister of Health, Nomafrench Mbombo, officially opened the Napier Clinic. In her address, Minister Mbombo said that the previous clinic was in West Street and proved to be inadequate in comparison to the number of residents serviced at the facility.

Commissioned in May 2016 by the Department of Public Works (DTPW) for the Western Cape Government Health, the construction of a R26 million new clinic in Napier to replace existing facilities has reached practical completion and is operational.

With the needs of the community assessed the new facility has been designed to be easily accessible to people with disabilities, with green building principles and energy efficiency measures. Features include separate consultation rooms, wound care and treatment rooms, as well as areas for the treatment of infectious diseases and a multipurpose meeting room. Primary healthcare services include: women’s health, child health, mental health, oral health, rehabilitation services, infectious disease treatment, curative and chronic care.

In her address, Minister Mbombo said: “The investment of an improved health facility for the community of Napier has been overdue, the new Napier Clinic will meet current needs, and it has been designed to keep pace with the future needs of the local community.”

The old Napier clinic could not keep up with the growth of the community and found itself in a situation where patient circulation, departmental and clinical functions were seriously compromised.

The new site allows integration of services, and to improve the quality of services and re-organisation of the facility.

The facility will be operational from Monday to Friday during the hours 07:00 to 16:00.  Patients requiring specialised treatment will be referred to Otto du Plessis Hospital.

The profile of disease in Napier shows that the biggest challenges are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at 12.1% and HIV/AIDS at 6.1%.
