World Breastfeeding Week 2012

26 July 2012

The Western Cape Government Health, in conjunction with the City of Cape Town, will be hosting a Breastfeeding festival at the Good Hope Centre to promote breastfeeding to mothers with infants on 8 August 2012. There will also be an attempt to break the current Guinness World record for the number of mothers breastfeeding at the same time.

Breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development.

Breast milk contains the right balance of nutrients to help an infant grow into a strong and healthy toddler. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond.

Date: Wednesday, 8 August 2012
Time: 08:30 - 11:30

The Red Cross War Memorial Children`s Hospital is also celebrating World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August 2012). On Thursday, 2 August, gold beaded breastfeeding pins were awarded to breastfeeding mothers in the hospital wards, to honour their decision and commitment to breastfeed. Furthermore, an Interactive Information Day will be hosted on 7 August for all staff and breastfeeding mothers at the Hospital. The purpose of this Information Day is to allow breastfeeding mothers and staff to engage with experts in the field of breastfeeding such as Milk Matters and La Leche League, a global movement consisting of breastfeeding consultants that provide training to mothers who are breastfeeding and those struggling to breastfeed.

There will also be fun activities and prizes for the breastfeeding mothers on the day.
