Western Cape Health Department delivers better services to Retreat Community

1 June 2016

Statement by Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape Minister of Health

Today, the Retreat Community Health Centre (CHC) officially consolidated the HIV/Aids and TB, Child Health and Women’s Health services from the City of Cape Town-run Retreat Clinic.

The joint decision to consolidate the services was made between the Western Cape Government Health and the City of Cape Town. A more holistic and integrated healthcare package will now be offered in line with the Provincial Department’s Healthcare 2030 plan for a better patient-centred approach and quality of care.

Services at the Retreat City Clinic, also known as the Retreat Baby Clinic, will continue to operate as normal from 07:30 – 16:00 Monday to Friday.

The CHC facility, which treats approximately 17 500 patients per month, will now provide healthcare to an additional 1 500 patients who access the Baby Clinic.

The HIV/Aids and TB services have been shifted away from the Retreat City building, which is situated next to Retreat CHC, due to infrastructure and infection control challenges, and will now operate from Retreat CHC.

Previously the Provincial-run facility tested clients for TB via sputum tests and referred positive tested patients to another health institution for treatment and further healthcare. Now, due to the amalgamation and consolidation of services, both testing and treatment will be administered at Retreat CHC.

The staff at Retreat CHC will run awareness drives on TB at the facility in order to alleviate any misconception people might have about the illness.
