Minister Mbombo officially opens Du Noon Community Health Centre

18 August 2015

The Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo officially opened the Du Noon Community Health Centre (CHC) today 18 August 2015.

“The Western Cape Government is committed to providing quality healthcare services to all in the Western Cape. This Community Health Centre will not only provide essential primary health service to this community, but also to communities in surrounding areas. Access to health service is central to my vision of building healthy, resilient, wellness conscious individuals” says Minister Mbombo.

The Du Noon Community Health Centre (CHC) provides access to a comprehensive Primary Health Care (PHC) service package to the community of Du Noon, and to clients who reside within a wide drainage area, from Joe Slovo, Sanddrift, Marconi Beam, Parklands, Table View, Albow Gardens and Milnerton.

People working at the many industrial and commercial premises in Killarney and Montague Gardens who commute into the area from other parts of the Metro, shall also derive access to health care offered at the modern, purpose-designed facility that cost an estimated R72 million to construct. Its size and design caters for an estimated population of ninety thousand which takes into consideration the growth in the Northern Corridor. Du Noon CHC is currently one of three large Community Health Centre’s situated within the Southern Western substructure of the Metro District Health Services (MDHS), and its modern and fresh design sets a new standard of access to person centred health care.

The new Du Noon Community CHC has been operational since 15 December 2014 and is situated along the Koeberg-Potsdam Road axis. A carefully-planned commissioning process dating back to 2012 has resulted in the expansion of Primary Health Care to this area.

“This facility replaces a previous clinic operated by the City of Cape Town in Du Noon until 2012. The previous facility had serious space and infrastructural constraints that limited the delivery of service packages. An innovative temporary facility had been utilized to transition the growth of services and develop staff capacity which rendered services to a full Community Day Centre (CDC) package at the Winning Way premises from November 2013 until the relocation into the brand new facility on Potsdam Road in December 2014,” says Dr Kathryn Grammer, Director of the Southern/Western substructure of the Department of Health.

The Du Noon CHC is expanding its operating hours with step-wise commissioning. Operating times are from 07:30 - 16:00 from Monday to Friday; however, in order to alleviate pressure for New Somerset Hospital, the facility recently started offering extended hours for Emergency services from 07:30 – 20:00 from Monday to Friday and Saturday to Sunday from 08:00 – 15:00.

The community will have access to the following services at Du Noon CHC:

  • Chronic diseases treatment and care
  • Child health
  • Emergency services
  • Infectious diseases treatment and care
  • Obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Oral health
  • Pharmacy
  •  Rehabilitation services including Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy
  • Digital Radiography services
  • Women’s health
