Sixty-nine Drivers Screened for Drunk Driving in Beaufort West

The joint operational roadblock on 6 January 2013 forms part of Safely Home’s campaign to reduce the number of people killed on the province’s roads by 50% by the end of 2014.

The following stakeholders participated in the roadblock along the Beaufort West Corridor between Beaufort West and the Eastern Cape:

The exercise started at 18:00 and ended at midnight.

During the roadblock 69 vehicles were stopped and thoroughly inspected. Of these, 11 fines were issued to passenger vehicles for overloading. 

The officials who took part in the exercise focused on:

  • Drunken driving.
  • Fatigue management.
  • Safety belt offences.
  • Overloading.
  • Failure to produce Professional Driving Permits.
  • Public transport vehicle/driver violation.
  • Invalid and fraudulent licences.
  • Vehicle related incidents such as illegal number plates and defective vehicles.

Sixty-nine drivers were screened for drunken driving but no arrests were made. A total of 39 fines worth R14 100 were issued.
