"In order to grow, we have to deliver infrastructure, therefore we have to give our young people the opportunity to join this initiative." This was Minister Marius Fransman's key message at the recent launch of the Work-Integrated Learning Programme.

Driven by the Corporate Affairs Bursaries Component, this initiative will focus on giving 77 young students practical experience in the Department of Transport and Public Works during their studies. The program aims to target students studying scarce skills such as engineering, architecture and quantity surveying.

Head of the Department, Mr Thami Manyathi, emphasised that the Department of Transport and Public Works was in a postion to make a difference. "Infrastructure is a key service for economic growth and fighting poverty," he said.

130 study bursaries will be made available during the course of 2006 as part of the Masakhe iSesizwe launch, which will take place in February 2006.
