First Braille Pay Sheet Issued

9 February 2006

The Department of Transport and Public Works had an extra reason to celebrate the International Day of Disabled Persons, which was celebrated across the country recently. The first pay slip to be printed in braille was handed to Luwie Links (right), a visually challenged switchboard operator in the department.

Mr Links was deeply moved when he received this slip from Jan du Plessis, Senior Manager of the Human Resource Management, and expressed his gratitude at being able to "see" his monthly income and deductions.

Mr Links, who was blinded by accident as a child, is escorted to work daily by his guide dog Shingi. He says that they tackle the daily trip from Bishop Lavis to his office in Dorp Street without any hitches. "She then waits at my feet for our 10 o' clock "walky break" and then returns to her cosy spot under the desk until we leave for home in the afternoon.
