More Vehicle Impound Facilities Urgently Needed as Safely Home Campaign Begins
"I have requested the Head of Department to investigate the urgent establishment of at least three or four pound facilities. This investigation will consider land the province has available as well as scrutinising other factors including costs, security and maintenance of any new pounds" said the Minister.
"There are currently only two facilities where vehicles can be impounded in the province - in Ndabeni and Beaufort West. This is a wholly inadequate scenario".
The existing pound facilities won't be able to accommodate the anticipated extra demand for space the Safely Home campaign will need, particularly as the enforcement element ramps up over the festive season. Similarly, the huge distance between the two facilities makes it logistically difficult to impound vehicles throughout the province" said the Minister.
The plan to increase the number of pound facilities is a vital element of the Safely Home campaign to enforce roadworthiness and operator license adherence and compliance - particularly in public transport.
