Upgraded Table Bay Boulevard Opens in Time for the Soccer World Cup (Department of Transport and Public Works)

16 May 2010

The Minister of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle officially opened the upgraded Table Bay Boulevard this morning.

The upgrade of the 2km long N1 Table Bay Boulevard, from the Marine Drive Interchange to the Eastern Bank of the Salt River was a joint initiative between the Western Cape Provincial Government and the City of Cape Town. The upgrade of the road began on the 17th of September 2008. It was completed within budget and on schedule - right in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Minister Carlisle is happy that the upgrade will make a huge difference in ensuring the smooth flow of traffic on the N1.

The Table Bay Boulevard used to be a heavily congested road during peak hours. This upgrade will reduce traveling time and traffic congestion during peak hours. The new pedestrian bridge will enable pedestrians to cross the road safely and comfortably unlike in the past.

The upgrade included resurfacing of the road, building two new bridges and widening the two existing bridges. Furthermore, the pedestrian road bridge over the N1 Paarden Eiland was replaced in order to provide easy access and linkage for pedestrians from the Ysterplaat railway station over the N1. This bridge will also connect the future Integrated Rapid Transport (IRT) corridor between the N1 and the rail network.

The R166 million project created a total 338 job opportunities for the local community. The upgrade was a joint venture between Martin and East, and Exeo Kholeka.

Minister Carlisle concluded that the upgrade of the Table Bay Boulevard was in line with the Department of Transport and Public Works aim to ensure world class maintenance of provincial roads.
