New N2 Somerset West pedestrian bridge to save lives

16 February 2021

Road safety is one of my four strategic focus areas for prioritisation and implementation during my term of office.

The number of pedestrians who are killed on our roads is a serious concern. My Department’s Directorate: Road Safety Management performs road safety education, communication and awareness interventions at various Traffic Law Enforcement operations throughout the year. One of their focus areas is pedestrian safety.

The construction of the pedestrian bridge on the corner of De Beers Avenue and Trunk Road 2 (N2) near Somerset West was motivated by the need for safe passage for pedestrians to cross Trunk Road 2 from the urban area on the western side of Somerset West to the commercial areas and schools on the eastern side.

Following the schools opening yesterday, it is a great relief to announce that learners from Gordon High School and Danie Ackermann Primary School will no longer risk their lives by crossing the busy N2. They will now cross the intersection safely, using this new bridge at all times.

This bridge will also minimise the risk of pedestrians being injured and killed on the busy N2 as well as making this stretch of the road safer for motorists.

The Department of Transport and Public Works started the construction of the R22 million project in May 2019 and it was completed on the 31st January 2021.

The bridge consists of concrete ramps and stairs supported on reinforced concrete columns. The foundations comprise spread footings and piles.  Appurtenant works on this contract included the protection of some existing services at the site, drainage improvements, roadside furniture and fencing, kerbing, channelling and walkway asphalting, and brick paving.

Construction activities had limited impact on commuters using the N2 as road closure was not necessary as the steel arch works were done at night.

The project created 55 work opportunities and skills training for local residents. Local contractors, suppliers and service providers also benefitted from the project.

The high-quality road infrastructure that the Department of Transport and Public Works provides is an important component of a safe and effective transport system, and an enabler of economic and social development in the Western Cape.

I wish all the learners and other road users well on this new journey that will protect their lives.
