New Blackheath Primary School

1 January 2021

A R65m project to replace the old Blackheath Primary School structure has been completed.

The original school complex comprised of a fast-track concrete frame with lightweight infill panels which had reached an unsafe, unrepairable state. New regulations relating to minimum uniform norms and standards for public school infrastructure required the existing buildings to be replaced. The new facility is built to accommodate 1 240 learners. It comprises of a combination of standard plastered and painted stock brick construction and strip footings, with face brick infill panels. Concrete columns and beams were introduced for stabilising purposes at all buildings with steel trusses in the hall.

Teaching facilities will comprise the following:

  • 32 standard classrooms
  • (including 4 for Grade R);
  • 1 science laboratory room;
  • 2 multi-purpose classrooms; and
  • 2 multi-media classrooms.

The complex also has a hall with a feeding kitchen and toilet facilities, an administrative building and caretaker’s facilities.

One multi-purpose classroom was designed as a dance studio complete with timber floors and ballet mirrors.

The project provided 29 shortterm Expanded Public Works Programme employment opportunities. Twelve EPWP participants received formal life skills training for two days as well as technical skills training for five days. A total of R18.9m was spent on targeted contractor businesses, R2.9m on targeted suppliers and manufacturers, and R3.1m on targeted local labour.
