Traffic lanes will be temporarily closed, and access restricted in Bain's Kloof Pass (R301) between km13.60 and 42.70, between the 19 October 2020 and 09 December 2021.

Alternative routes available between Ceres and Wellington are the N1 route or Nuwekloof Pass (R46).

The Department of Transport and Public Works intends to repair and rehabilitate Bain’s Kloof Pass through the repair of road failed areas and the provision of a new asphalt surfacing.  Work will also include the general improvement of the drainage in the pass. The project will also address the stabilisation of unstable slopes in the pass as well as the up-grading of certain of the existing rest areas.

The contract for the repair and resurfacing has been awarded to Base-line Civils (Pty) Ltd in September 2020. The contract period is approximately 16 months, including public holidays and the year-end breaks. The completion date is therefore January 2022.

With regards to the accommodation of traffic during construction, the entire 29.1 km will be divided into four (4) work zones. The two (2) work zones either side of the pass sections will be repaired, rehabilitated and surfaced in half widths while the accommodation of one-way traffic will be maintained on the remaining half width of the road.

The two (2) middle sections will be closed to through traffic. However, local residents, construction vehicles and employees of businesses along these two sections will have access to the relevant properties and shall be accommodated through these sections as two-way traffic where no construction activities take place, and one-way traffic where roadworks on the roadway takes place. Roadworks will also be done in half or partial widths of road.

Traffic access will further be controlled in the middle two (2) sections by means of access control points. Access control at these points will be done 24 hours per day. These control points are located where unauthorised vehicles, including heavy vehicles can be instructed to turn back (Tweede Tol Camp and Antoniesvlei Resort). Authorised vehicles will be fitted with a disk for identification. Access to the properties and businesses shall be maintained at all times.

Information on traffic accommodation will be communicated through a monthly newsletter.
