Minister Madikizela opens upgraded multi-million Rand road in Gouda

Western Cape Transport and Public Works Minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela has officially opened the newly upgraded R44 Gouda Road with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Construction of the R190 million road commenced in June 2017 and its objective was to rehabilitate the Trunk Road 23 Section to make it fit for use by providing a new road surface. This project forms part of the Department of Transport and Public Works’ commitment to delivering quality transport infrastructure that contributes to the economy of the Western Cape.

Part of the work was to widen the road for better traffic and pedestrian safety and make improvements to the geometric alignment of the road. This was due to the fact that the existing road was in a state of disrepair and geometric alignment was not in accordance with current route classification requirements.

In addition to roadworks which includes road-markings, road signs, guardrails, fencing, kerbing and street lighting; several structural improvements to various bridges and culverts were also made.

During the opening, Minister Madikizela said it was a great honour to officially open the long-awaited upgraded road which created jobs for locals and emerging contractors. Building materials and concrete required for construction was obtained from existing commercial suppliers based in Tulbagh, Porterville, Worcester, Grabouw and Villiersdorp.

“It is a great honour to be part of this project that created job opportunities for local residents and emerging CIDB contractors. I am passionate about empowering local and young entrepreneurs. Through this programme, 179 locals from Gouda and Saron received formal training,”  said Minister Madikizela.

As part of the contractor’s general training, the locals received training in environmental awareness, safe working practices, roadside safety awareness, engineering and life skills.

Additionally, more people were trained in traffic accommodation, scaffolding, shuttering and fencing while others got driver’s licenses.

The Minister added: “ This road is one of the most important roads in the Drakenstein municipal area. Improving traveling time and easing congestion has always been a priority. My department will continue to invest in our roads to make them safe for our road users and for economic purposes.”
