Roadworks begin between De Rust and Uniondale

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) has started periodic maintenance on the R341 between De Rust and Uniondale. This R29 million project is expected to be complete by March 2019, if everything goes according to plan. The road provides access to the local farming community and to travellers between Uniondale and De Rust as well as Oudtshoorn.

The road was last refurbished in 1995. Because the road surface is severely cracked with surfacing failures, it has to be resurfaced. A total of 22 km of road will be resealed, major intersections will be upgraded, and new drains will be installed at various locations.

Half-width construction (involving the closure of one lane) will take place in sections with stop/ go controls to manage the flow of traffic. Motorists can expect a 15-minute waiting period at stop/ go points. DTPW is aware that delays are frustrating, but some inconvenience during construction is inevitable. Motorists will soon be able to enjoy a safer and more pleasant travelling experience on this road.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme employment and skills training opportunities. During the course of this project, a total of R7,4 million will be spent on targeted enterprises, and 11 750 person-days of work will be created for people from the Eden District Municipality area.
