Good progress on construction of new arrestor bed on Sir Lowry's Pass

25 June 2018

A R14 million Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to construct a new slipway and truck arrestor bed on the downward slope of the N2 near Sir Lowry’s Pass Road is making good progress. The project started in January 2018 and is expected to be completed in August 2018, if everything goes according to plan. All work is being carried out in the road shoulder and no road closures or obstructions are expected.

The N2 is being widened at this point to a maximum of 13 metres, and the length of the slipway and arrestor bed will be approximately 850 metres. New road markings will be put on the N2 when the other works are complete. Completed work on the project includes fencing, barrier kerbs, storm water pipe installation, culvert construction, and the filling of layerworks. Work in progress includes the construction of an oil trap, base construction, and the installation of a mountable kerb and channel.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme employment and skills training opportunities. To date, R543 910 has been spent on targeted enterprises and 1 618 person-days of work will be created for people from Sir Lowry’s Pass Village.

DTPW requests motorists to drive carefully near these works, and to adhere to the safety and traffic controls at the site.
