#SEEANDBESEEN during the Western Cape’s rainy season

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) is appealing to road users to exercise caution as the wet and more dangerous road conditions of winter settle in. Shorter, darker days, fog and rain during the Western Cape rainy season hamper visibility and can increase the risk of a road traffic crash.

“At this time of year, visibility decreases, the roads can be slippery, and motorists and pedestrians should be extra vigilant,” said Farrel Payne, DTPW Director: Traffic Law Enforcement. “Road safety is everybody’s responsibility. During the upcoming school holidays provincial and municipal agencies will be playing their part by intensifying ongoing traffic law enforcement activities,” he added. 

Drivers are responsible for seeing and being seen on roads by ensuring that all their lights are in working order, and that their mirrors and windows are clean and free of cracks. Pedestrians are responsible for seeing and being seen by avoiding walking on busy roads when they have been drinking, by wearing reflective clothing, and by carrying lights if possible.

Travel more slowly when visibility is poor and the roads are wet. Wear visible clothing when you walk next to a road. Don’t assume that just because you can see oncoming motorists that motorists can see you. If you are not seen on the road, you may not see your future.
