South Africa commemorates International Civil Aviation Day 2017

Western Cape – The Minister of Transport, Mr Joe Maswanganyi MP, will deliver a keynote address to guests and learners during the commemoration of the 2017 International Civil Aviation Day (ICAD) and Career Expo at the Air Force Base Langebaanweg in Langebaan, Western Cape under the theme ‘Working together to ensure no country is left behind’.

The ICAD and Career Expo is organised by the Department of Transport in partnership with the Western Cape Government and in conjunction with key stakeholders in aviation.

ICAD is an annual event initiated by the United Nations (UN) and is aimed at raising awareness regarding the importance of civil aviation as well as the role that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) plays in international air transport. ICAO is a United Nations specialist agency responsible for administering and standardising the world’s civil aviation activities.  

The commemoration will comprise two main events, i.e. a Career Expo and the the formal commemoration of ICAD.  The career expo will be attended by 2000 learners from neighbouring schools around the AFB Langebaanweg, especially those from previously disatvantaged communities.

Among other dignitaries attending the event, will be the Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga, the Western Cape MEC for Education, Executive Mayor of West Coast District Municipality, Executive Mayor of Saldanah Bay Local Municipality, CEOs of the Department of Transport aviation entities and other key stakeholders in the aviation industry.

The occasion will also be used to commemorate the contributions of one of South Africa’s struggle heroes, O.R Tambo, who would have turned 100 years this year.
