Roadworks begin between Prince Albert Road and Prince Albert

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) has started a R73 million project to reseal a 47 km stretch of road on the R407 between Prince Albert Road and Prince Albert. This is expected to have been completed in mid-2018.

The road was last refurbished in 1998. This road section is showing signs of pavement distress with cracks occurring more frequently and patching and repairs also being required more frequently. This project therefore plans to undertake repairs and preventative maintenance, as well as surfacing action to extend the life of the road. Works will include patching and resurfacing, and repairs and improvements to drainage and bridge structures.

Half-width construction (involving the closure of one lane) will take place in sections with stop/ go controls to manage the flow of traffic. Motorists can expect a 15-minute waiting period at stop/ go points. DTPW is aware that delays are frustrating, but some inconvenience during construction is inevitable. Motorists will soon be able to enjoy a safer and more pleasant travelling experience on this road.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme employment and skills training opportunities. During the course of this project, a total of R11 million will be spent on targeted enterprises and 14 500 person-days of work will be created for people from the Prince Albert municipal area.
