Ministers inspect progress on DTPW roadworks project

On 9 October, Joe Maswanganyi, national Minister of Transport and Donald Grant, provincial Minister of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) conducted a site inspection to monitor progress on a roadworks project currently under way on the N1 between Plattekloof Road and the Old Oak Interchange.

This R487 million project started in February 2016 and is expected to be completed in April 2019, if everything goes according to plan.

The project is 41% completed. The work, being implemented in phases, includes adding lanes on both sides of the freeway, new auxiliary lanes, extensions of the existing concrete median barrier, intersection improvements along the affected stretch, the demolition and reconstruction of the Old Oak West Bridge, and repairs to other bridges.

The project is creating a number of short-term job and skills development opportunities. To date, R10,6 million has been spent on targeted labour while 21 990 person-days of work have been created for people from the City of Cape Town municipal area.

The project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on one of Cape Town’s busiest roads.
